The Democrats and Iraq

The Democrats have Bush right where they should want him. Unless Congress allocates more funds, Bush won't have the funds to continue military operations in Iraq after July. But the Democrats act like Bush has the upper hand. OY!

Our presence in Iraq does nothing for the Iraqi people: they want us out, ASAP. Our presence in Iraq harms our national security. We would be much safer here at home if we left. The American people want us out too. The American people voted Republicans out of Congress, mainly because they wanted out of Iraq.

But it looks like the Democrats in Congress are going to knuckle under to Bush and let him keep fighting his foolhardy debacle in Iraq. Bush and the Republican frame the issue in terms of supporting the troops and many Democrats run from cover. How is letting the troops die (and keeping them from their jobs and families)in a lost cause supporting the troops? Was it the troops' idea to go to Iraq? Why won't the Democrats take on this illogical argument?

Why? Why are the Democrat's committing political suicide? They were sent to Congress the clean up corruption and get us out of Iraq. The only way they can get us out of Iraq is to cut off funding. Now Congress' approval ratings are falling, especially among Democrats and Independents.

Right now a minority of the Democrats in Congress are bringing their party and much more importantly, their country, down. Its a profile in cowardice.

Steve, the reason they can do this is because they know they already have people like you in their back pocket. Honestly, you can criticize them now, but when the election comes up again, you'll be the first in line voting for them and they know that. So why do they care what people like you think. They will ignore you knowing you'll come back to them no matter what they do.

Anonymous said...

Anon 7:12 is absolutely right. This is good politics for Democrats.

Instead of ending the war too early, they can drag this issue out all the way until the 2008 election. Sure, some Democratic activists like Steve will complain and moan about it, but the Democrats in Congress known they will eventually come back like a bunch of YES MEN when the election rolls around again. The Democrats in Congress really have nothing to lose by dragging this war out and letting more troops get killed for political gain.

Honestly Steve, what are you going to do about it? Not vote for them?

I have a theory that although political parties may define themselves differently they are the same, groups of people subject to the same forces of emotion, intellect, power, economics, etc.

If there is a difference, it occurs because one individual captures the moment and drives the group in a certain direction.

That individual is not present at this time. Certainly not the current President, I don't see Leadership in the current list of candidates, and there is no leader in Congress.

The Democrats got in office because the Republicans are incompetent, not because, they, the Democrats are more competent.

We can write all we want, complain to each other, but we will wallow in this mess, until one individual unites a strong enough force to move the rest of us in a direction.

When that occurs, lets hope that person understands history, has the right vision, and is a person of good character.

I'm as mad as Steve is about the Democrats in Congress. That doesn't mean I'll vote against them in the next general election. Anonymous 8:01 (ha: sounds like a Bible citation!), it wasn't their intransigence killing troops for political gain, it's Bush's for deluding himself he's some kind of Churchill.

But the failure of Democrats currently in Congress to oppose this more effectively does mean I'll be supporting better ones in the primaries. Thus, no more funds to the DCCC (sorry, Chris!) -- they can get back to me when they've decided what they stand for... and what they won't go for.

Steve Fine said...

Anon. 7:12 and 8:11 don't know me very well and haven't paid clear attention to what I have written on fineline.

Chances are that come next election, I will vote Democratic again. First of all, because the Democrats that will be on my ballot, Cardin, Mikulski and Sarbanes, will have voted against the war. Second, and more importantly, while the Democratic leadership stinks, the Republicans are so increadibly unbelivably bad and evil that thay make the Democrats look good in comparision.

The fact that what is clearly in the best interest of our nation does not seem to have solid support in either Party bodes very poorly for our nation's future.

As a society, we can't hope to make incredibly stupid decisions over and over again, without an eventual day of reckoning.

If we don't wake up and face our problems in health care, energy, foreign policy, corruption in government, global warming and the failure of our leaders to respect and enforce the Constitution, we will find ourselves faced with very grave problems in the not so distant future.

Steve Fine said...

Oh, And I left out the third and most important point. Yeah, the Dems are not wht I hope they would be, but I'm not going to give up on my country just because it has flaws or because the fight will be a tough one. I choose to stay and fight for our future and for the ideals which this nation is supposed to stand for. There is absolutly no hope for the Republicans, there is still some hope for the Democrats. I can still name some good Democrats, Gore, Obama, Edwards, Cardin, Sarbanes, Waxman, Conyers (and a good number of others).

But I can't come up with a list of good Republicans. (Hagel?, Bloomberg?)

Steve Fine said...

Oh, and another point of my post was missed: Basically, I was arguing that if the Dems fail to deliver, they too will get booted out of office.

I fear many dems are missing that point.

Anonymous said...

Steve, you asked these two questions:

"Why won't the Democrats take on this illogical argument?

Why? Why are the Democrat's committing political suicide?"

I agree with anon 8:11, their moves are not political suicide at all and, in fact, will benefit them greatly in the future because it helps keep Iraq as a main issue. Sure, they will take complaints from activists now, but the point is the Democratic leaders just don't care because they know they can count on the people like you to fall back in line when it counts at Election time. And knowing this, they decided to vote to cater to those people in the center to expand their base further. Take the hits from the base in a noin-eleciton year so that they fall back in line later on.

The ends (a Democratic President) will justify their vote now even if it means a few more dead troops in the meantime. It sounds horrible to say, but that is the way politics works.

Steve Fine said...

I've been concerned that the Dems wanted to keep the war going so that they could run against it in '08. but, in addition to being totally immoral, its still political suicide.

First of all, getting us out would be a feather in the Dem's cap that would win them '08. Second, they are not appealing to the center, the center wants out of Iraq! They could look strong and decisive, the party that gets results, instead they have chosen to look like (and be) wimps. So I think they have really hurt themselves politically, watch upcoming polls.

Third they really risk losing their base, many dems are fuming and like me, won't give a cent of our money or a second of our time to them until this changes.

Finally, this gives Congressional Republicans a chance to force Bush's hand, if they do that, then they will get the credit for ending the war, and then the Dems will have no chance in '08.

Any good lawyer or athlete knows that when you have your opponent down, you don't let them back up.

Our Democratic Leadership in Congress (except for Pelosi) just let the Republicans up off the floor.
