Certainly an issue that should be looked at. The tax cut definately has merit... but it is unfortunate that all of Ulman and Guzzone's amendments were not included in the final bill. Allowing seniors the ability to age in place on fixed incomes is very important for the county, but when we make public policy it's important not to favor certain classes of people over others, and to make those policies in a balanced way. For example, anyone who rents in Howard County really doesn't benefit from this law.

Bryon your points are good, and with respect I offer this thought.
Our tax codes have had a long history of favoring certain classes of people over others. I am not suggesting this as a reason to continue the inbalance, but in the absence of one tax, or tax rate for all, there will always be the absence of balance for all. Taxes, in addition to being a source of revenue for governments, are also a way to control or not to control, I see the Senior tax cut as an adjustment not just to help some individuals who may be on fixed incomes, but also as an adjustment for those Seniors who have payed into the local cost of education ( over 50% on the county's budget) but no longer have children in the school
system. Yes this is self centered, but there is a growing proportion of Howard Co. residents who are Seniors, and their presence will continue to be a force to pressure for a tax cutjust as when the population was younger and there were pressures to inprove education, thus increase taxes.

Seniors get the benefit of good schools in the form of higher real estate values, so they should pay the same taxes as the rest of us. They could all sell their homes and move to Mexico and live like kings if they wanted to. Prescription drugs are cheaper there too. As long as they don’t drink the water, they’re set. Via con dios.

Coulda, coulda, coulda dosen't mean they shoulda.

Government should make decisions for the citizens they are serving, and our government uually adresses the majority or in some cases the most influential portion of the citizens. It is in this manner that we should bring balance to the community in order to serve both the young and the ederly.
